Deciding on surgery

I was 16 when my boobs stopped growing. I breast-fed my 1st child for weeks, but not the 2nd.

I couldn’t find bras to fit & I’m fed up of being boobless. I feel cheated that I’ve no boobs. I don’t look as feminine as I feel. I’ve tried ERDIC, which claims is a natural breast enhancer, but it didn’t work for me. I’ve used all kinds of enhancing bras – I’m fed up with them all. I got loads of information from Internet about the BA procedure.

PS Consultation £100 (included pre-op & 2nd PS consult if required).
My 1st and only consultation was with Mr Stewart, in June 03 at a Bupa hospital in the UK. My PS put at ease by asking a few questions, then described the procedure, possible complications & my options. We discussed size, and I showed him photos of the boobs I like. I got to feel some implants and took home 3 sizers: 180cc, 240cc & 300cc. My biggest fear is being too small - or too big!

He examined my boobs & said there'd be no problems with carrying out the ba. I’ll have a general anaesthesic & wake up with my sports bra on, which I’ve to provide, in a size bigger than I want to become. The consult lasted 35 minutes. I'll have an overnight stay in hospital

Pre op appointment - 24 June 2003
I had a pre op appointment with the Plastic Surgery Specialist Nurse on 24 June, which lasted 20 minutes. I took with my post-op bra. I was concerned about size & the amount of ccs I’d need to bring me to a medium to full C cup, but nurse assured me that my PS had a lot of experience and would not let me be too small/big for my frame. I’ll have to wear my post op sports bra for 3 months, day & night, but I can wear a non-wired bra for special occasions for an hour or so.

The Surgery 10 July 2003 £3600
I got a taxi to the hospital. I was shown to my private room, with ensuite bathroom, TV & telephone. My PS came to measure me & I met the anaesthetist. I put on a pair of TED stockings to prevent DVT. I put on the gown, hat, put my bra under my pillow. At 8am, I was wheeled into theatre on my bed. I was given a big dose of anti-biotics so I wouldn’t have to take them orally. The anaesthetist put an IV in, & the next thing I knew, I was shivering like mad and felt really tight / heavy across the chest. Back in my room, a nurse checked me regularly, took my BP, pulse and temperature. She checked my boobs for tightness and ensured they were the same size. I got diamorphine IV, which made me sick for the next 48 hours on & off. After surgery, I just slept. I tried to eat, but vomited, which meant none of the pain meds were staying down. My PS came in to check me twice, & he was very happy with the results. He got me some IV anti-emetic, which worked a treat to stop the nausea and vomiting. Had my period – told nurse – wasn’t a problem.

The Next Day
I got discharged 25 hours after surgery. My mum drove me home. I didn’t have pillows, but it wasn’t too bad.
I got Diclofenac Sodium (Voltarol) an anti-inflammatory drug & co-dydramol home with me for pain. I’m taking Arnica for bruising, & so far, I have none. It’s really tender around the sides & underneath - tight & heavy. I’m tired & could drop off to sleep at any time.
Day 2
This is the worst day. I can't keep any food down. I vomited a few times, and the pain was becoming unbearable, so I called my PS, who got the duty doctor to visit my home. I got IM anti-emetic & a prescription for co-proxamol. The nausea & vomiting is worse than the actual boobie pain. I had a shower. My children are home. I told them I pulled a muscle in my chest at work. They seem to accept that & have been very good at helping themselves & me.

Day 3
I had a good sleep last night, propped upright with a few pillows and no painkillers at all. My boobs still feel stiff & tight but less so. They only hurt if I move too fast. I feel so much better with the nausea gone. I had a shower today & put a little deodorant on, and some baby oil on my skin which is flaky. Bloatedness & constipation seem to be an issue now. I took some Milk of Magnesia.

Day 4
I’ve an appointment with PS nurse. My mum is taking me, as I can’t drive. Nurse just looked at wound site, checked breasts weren’t too tight & the right sizes. I’m just taking paracetamol now & using ice when I have to. I have the odd shooting pain/ burning sensation going through my wound sites after I get up from lying down or sitting a while, but apart from that they feel ok. I still feel tight & a little heavy across the chest but they’re softening a little every day. I still sleep semi-upright with 6 pillows, & can’t wait till I can lie on my side! I’m still troubled with a bloated tummy. I look 6 months pregnant!

Day 5
I slept lying "flat" last night - with 5 pillows under my head only! It's the nearest I've come to lying "normally" in bed. I had a good night's sleep & had only slight discomfort in my wound sites as I got out of bed. I find it helps if you move very slowly & LEAD WITH YOUR HEAD! Tried to shave my armpits & it was quite tricky, as they’ve become deeper & more angled! Nobody has noticed/commented on any size change either. My right boob (I'm right-handed so muscles will be more developed on this side) is taking it's time to drop. At the moment the left boob looks a bit bigger.

Day 6
I woke up with a sore lower back from sleeping with all those pillows. I’m getting irate with my dominant side (right) as it’s way behind the left in dropping, It’s a whole inch smaller measuring across the nipple! My period disappeared soon after surgery - then it returned today. I also had my 1st CRY today. I just felt alone & weepy & in need of comfort which wasn’t here.

Day 7
I didn’t feel a twinge when I got out of bed this morning, after 8 hours of sleep on 3 pillows, as flat as I could lie. I’m still not driving. We’re walking everywhere - slowly! My bowels & eating habits are back to normal now. I’m off the codeine so that should help. The tummy bloatedness is still there but not as bad. The right booby is still not droppng so it looks smaller than the left one. Emotionally I feel better too. That cry must’ve done some good.

2 weeks post op - PS appointment
This appointment with my PS lasted about 25 minutes. He examined my boobs, then took out the stitches (crease incision). It didn't hurt, but it stung a little on the left side. It only took seconds. The scars are thin lines about 2.5inches long. He assured me that the implants were inserted symmetrically & showed me the pre-op photos he’d taken. He assured me that the right implant would drop & he thought it was swelling rather than the implant itself, as he could feel the implant at the crease. He took photos after he'd taken the stitches out. I signed the forms to go on the National Breast Implant Registry (UK). I can massage my scars by gently pressing on them I can put Vit E oil or Mederma on them when they're completed healed. I’ve another appointment in 6 weeks, then annually.

16 days post op

This seems to be the turning point, where there's less discomfort & a better range of movement is gained. I can almost sleep on my side now, with no pillows for support. I’m less achy & they feel less tight, almost as though they could jiggle. I only take the occasional pain med now.

8 week assessment

Told PS I wasn’t happy with right as it wasn’t dropping. He seemed to think it wouldn’t now drop and suggested revision.  We made a provisional date for revision to right implant for 3 months time.

I didn’t have a strap to help push the right down.

Revision

Five months after ba, and I’m back in. I had the same PS and anaesthetist.  The revision was done via original crease scar using the same implant.

Recovery’s much easier & quicker.

Unfortunately it has been lowered too much and now sits 2cm lower than the left.

I haven’t told PS I’m unhappy about it.  I can live with it until I win the lottery.
